Montrose Advances in Walk-Off Fashion

MONTROSE, Colo.–Senior second baseman Luis Perez scored the game-winning run on a passed ball to give (7) Montrose a 6-5 victory over (10) Pueblo West Saturday at Montrose High School.

“That was my call,” Perez said. “It was an 0-2 count, two outs. I had to go for it. It was close enough, I knew I could make it.”

The Indians beat (26) Glenwood Springs, 6-0, in the opening round of districts and advance to the Class 4A state championship.

They’ll face Broomfield Saturday, May 19, at Cherokee Trail High School. First pitch set for 12:30 p.m.

“With this team, I’ve got the utmost confidence,” senior pitcher/first baseman Zane Hemond said. “I know we’re never going to stop fighting. I couldn’t be happier with our team. We’ve got a lot of guys with a ton of heart. We just want it more, and it shows in the finals.”

Pueblo West’s Dustin Peterson hit a solo home run to tie the game in the top of the sixth. Montrose scored five runs in the first inning, but were held scoreless until the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.

“I think this might be the ninth game that we’ve won when we’re behind in the sixth inning or later,” said Montrose head coach Landon Wareham. “It’s not the way I like to do it, but they like to do it that way, and I really don’t care. They did a good job. They’re tough kids. I wouldn’t say we’re just a great, overly-talented baseball team, but you better come beat us.”
